there's no Earthly way to know!"
Well, musical has come along well. As many of you know, I've been lucky enough to get the part of one of the Grandparents, specifically, Grandpa George. It's a very easy and fun part, I simply lay in a large bed and sleep and yell. That's about it.
I'm totally clueless of what is going on. What a fun character!
Anyway, our first big week at McDowell went great. We've had the chance to expand our blocking and dance numbers, as well as practice with the pit orchestra. It's been an enjoyable experience, and I'm looking foward to the performance.
Let's see, tonight we're doing music with movement (cue to cue) so I won't have much to do. Also, I'll probably need to find a ride home tonight. Music and movement means a fairly easy night, as I am only in two songs (plus a little dialogue in the song, and Finale and Bows).
Anyway, I just giggle when I think back to when we first moved to Ashland. We came to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and boy, I was fasinated at it. They put on a really good show, professional level. Then of course they did the classics, Beauty and the Beast, Damn Yankees, Oliver!, Grease, and now Willy Wonka. Each of which was better than the last, and each of which was better than similar, or professional theater productions.
It just kind of hit me the other day, that the AHS musical is a big Ashland tradition, and some little kid in the audience is going to be amazed, much like I was, at this production. It's just neat to be involved in something I thought was cool as a kid.
Then again, I thought High School would be so cool as a kid too...

"Big Band Dance" @ AU Convocation Center
Swing dancing, jazz music, and all that jazz (pardon the pun!) was the theme of the night, and what a pleasant night it was. They really put me In the Mood to go to Africa or New York, New York. All joking aside, it was a really wonderful concert.
The music was wonderful. Each set was performed and the bands really knew their music. I was impressed, there were nearly 50 songs played and the bands never seemed to tire. Overall musical performance gets a 8/10.
Of course, no jazz show would be complete without the classics such as Glen Miller's In the Mood, Sing, Sing, Sing, Stormy Weather, Caravan and Africa. I give a pat on the back to the conductors for music selection.
Not only were the AHS Jazz Bands on display, but vocalists, singing delightful tunes. I enjoyed the vocal performances, specifically because they were not overwhelming, and did not push across a 'concert' where you sit and clap. 8/10 for vocals.
I would however critique the transitions. There were awkward and long pauses between sets. A few breaks between sets is always nice, so you can have a restroom break or get a drink, but some of them were just to long. Professionalism gets a 7/10.
Aesthetics were okay. There were no big 'wow' things-which was very nice, so folks could focus on dancing and having a good time without major distractions (like TSO's indoor fireworks!). 6/10
The overall showmanship was okay. The performance area could have been a little bigger, not only the stage but the dance floor as well. 5/10
I would also like to point out that the judges of the swing dancing contest were very specific in announcing that they knew nothing about dancing, which was a total factor, as it gave the loosing or low-placing couples a good reason to whine. Perhaps have people who are a bit more knowledgeable about dancing judge next year.
Music: 8/10
Vocals: 8/10
Professionalism: 7/10
Aesthetics: 6/10
Showmanship: 5/10
Overall, I will definitely be returning to AHS's Big Band Dance. It was a treat and a welcome change. Overall: 7/10. Great performance, and recommended to others.
Wham, Bam, Alacazam, the Ashland High School jazz bands performed tonight at the Ashland University Convocation Center, playing up a storm.

Holy Mind Control Batman!
I'm sure even the boy-wonder couldn't fathom what new wondrous (or perhaps not so) technological marvels are now entering our warming world!
Not sure what I'm talking about? I'm talking about Uncle Milton's Jedi Force Trainer
The Force Trainer toy is a game where you put on a headset and, using concentration and will power, you actually levitate a small ball. Yeah-I'm not kidding.
You wear a small headset that contains a miniature EKG machine-a machine that reads the electrical signals of your brain, which is then sent to a small fan in a tube that spins depending on how hard you concentrate. If you thoroughly concentrate, the fan will spin faster, allowing you to make a ping pong ball fly up in the tube.
If Uncle Milton industries would like to send me on, I will gladly review it. Just saying...
But for now, I'll just have to sit back and be amazed at this amazing new technology.
But what does it all mean? Perhaps it just means that American are getting so lazy that they need to invent ways to play without ever moving. Or perhaps it means we are entering the time of Star Wars, where space travel, mind control and undersea living all enter to make us the most advance civilization anywhere and everywhere.
What do you think about the mind control software?
That's right Robin-we've passed the era of bats in a cave, and now we're headed for the Jetsons!

Giant Squid, Haitians, Buga-Buga!!!
Sweet Cinabons! Squid are invading California! Oh no...how terrible....
It must mean the...the END OF THE WORLD! (right?)
WRONG!!!
Yes, there seems to be some biblical plagues that mimic those in (not only Exodus) but Revelation.
But does that really mean the world is going to end? No. No. No, it doesn't.
Let me explain why:
For those of you who aren't History Channel buffs, the History Channel had a special a few days ago called Exodus Decoded. It was a nice special-what they did was describe all of the plagues that hounded Egypt and the possible reasons behind them.
If you would like, you can find the video here.
Okay, here is my point, not only have I (and other 12bstewa authors) ranted about the end of the world and whatnot-but there have been several people seriously concerned about the Wars in the Middle-East, the Earthquake in Haiti, and now the Giant Squid.
A lot of folks believe that they are all signs that the end is near-can I tell you something? It's not. Not yet.
The end of the world is something that will come eventually, whether
through the God you believe in or humans own self-destruction.
It's going to happen.
Sorry to burst your conservative bubble.
The 'horrible phenomenon' that is happening now with the Giant Squid in Cali happened a few years ago in Mexico.
I promise, the world will not end December 21st, 2012. Just as it did not end on January 1st, 2000, or in 1992.
The world will spin, and when it does end, it ends. So stop worrying. Sit back and relax...

(Musical p 5) "Cheer up Charlie, Give Me a Smile!
Well, we are well into musical rehersals now. There are 3 weeks until opening night--which is now Thursday night.
Yeah. For those of you who don't know, Hell Week normally works like this-practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, pray, practice, then on Thursday, there is a show in the morning for the Middle School (since we use their auditorium) and then Friday is opening night.
Well, Friday night tickets are going quick-and Saturday and Sunday are filling up to. So we've decided to make it official! There will now be a public showing on Thursday night.
Anyway...we've moved into the Middle School as of this week. It's neat to see all the elements coming together.
Anyway, this post is mainly to let you know about Thursday night.

Name Change: Suggestions?
The reason: there are about 605 other blogs out there called "Branden's Blog", and "Branden's Blog" is not very specific.
So, we are changing our name. This is another of the major changes I mentioned was coming in 2010.
Although we know we want a name change, we aren't really sure what to change it to.
So, we are going to leave it up to you: the people who matter most-the readers!
Leave a comment below suggesting a name. All the names will be put into a drawing and one will be randomly drawn out.
Yes, you can comment as many times as you like with the same name. Say you suggest "BloggerABC" 10 times. Then "BloggerABC" will be put into the drawing 10 times!
Our writers have suggested the following names:
- 12bstewa
- The Open Blog
- Stewie's Blog
- Branden's Variety Page
- Nednarb's Reviews
- The Monthly Catch
- Stewie Soup
Let us know what you think-vote for one of the above or suggest a new one!
